Illustrating the Revolution and the Syrian War

The fifth production by Creative Memory of the Syrian Revolution

Based on our daily updated archives, we reproduce in this sub-project a chronology of events and dates that have changed, influenced and marked the Syrian revolution and war, starting from the beginning of the peaceful uprising, passing by its militarization and its consequences, until the end of 2019.

We are driven by the constant desire to offer insights into archives at a time when it can be difficult for non-specialists to browse thousands of documents to understand the unfolding of events since 2011.

We are also motivated by the desire to offer an alternative to fast and superficial information that leave the readers insensitive, with no capacity for action or indignation.

We are well aware of the danger of the “winner” story. The “winner”, who now works more than ever to “occupy” the land of the memory and to impose his unilateral narrative of events.

In the first axis of this new project, we present the chronology. This chronology is divided into several phases, the first of which was launched under the title “From the Revolution, to the Chemical Weapon”, covering the time period between 2011 and 2013, and will be followed by successive time periods until the end of 2019.

The first phase is supported by the French Institute – Syria, Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung, CCFD-Terre Solidaire, ANR program Shakk, and Arkiva. It was launched on September 19, 2019.

The second phase is supported by AFAC, CCFD-Terre Solidaire, and Arkiva. It was launched on May 29, 2020.
