No Return With Assad
11/11/2020
Note
On 11 November 2020, the International Conference on the Return of Syrian Refugees was launched in Damascus, with the participation of Russia and countries supporting the Syrian regime, while the United Nations attended as an observer. European Union countries boycotted the conference, considering that the cessation of conflict in a number of regions does not mean that Syria is now ready for the return of refugees, as it lacks proper infrastructure and services and in light of the flagrant human rights violations committed in the country. Many humanitarian and human rights organizations, along with a group of political organizations, also announced that they will boycott the conference. In the countrysides of Idlib and Aleppo, 41 civil and revolutionary groups released a boycott statement, in which they declared that Russia is still attempting to resurrect al-Assad's regime and give it false legitimacy. Activists outside of Syria launched a social media campaign under the hashtag #no_return_with_assad, stressing that the existence of al-Assad and his regime is the real obstacle to the return of displaced persons and refugees, according to Reuters, Middle East Monitor, DW Arabic, RT Arabic, al-Modon, the Syrian Press Center.

What’s Going On In Azerbaijan?
26/09/2020
Note
On 26 September 2020, Reuters reported that Syrian opposition fighters are on their way to Azerbaijan in coordination with Ankara, confirming that Turkey is sending Syrian opposition fighters to support Azerbaijan in its escalating conflict with Armenia, as part of the ongoing clashes between the two countries over the Nagorno-Karabakh region. This was confirmed to the agency by the Armenian ambassador in Moscow, who said that Turkey had sent “around 4,000 fighters from northern Syria to Azerbaijan to take part in the fighting.” Azerbaijan denied these reports, while Turkey has not yet commented, according to Reuters.

"I can't breathe!"
Those were the last words said by George Floyd, an unarmed African-American man who suffocated to death after a Minneapolis police officer kneeled on his neck while pinning him down.

Note
Hundreds of thousands of Americans took to the streets as protests broke out in several cities in the United States, accompanied by violence and clashes between protesters and police officers. A wave of anger ignited the protests after a video shared on social media showed the death of an African-American man named George Floyd who was crying out "I can't breathe", as a police officer kneeled on his neck and back as he pinned him to the ground, ignoring the calls of people asking him to stop, according the BBC and Euronews.

Note
Since the Sochi agreement in 17 September 2018, the countrysides of Idlib and Aleppo, which are part of the demilitarized zone or the de-escalation zone, have been subjected to several military campaigns that have been escalating since October 2018. However, the most violent campaign was launched in December 2019 by the regime, with the support of Russia. The region witnessed bombing, forced displacement and systematic destruction, which resulted in the regime taking control of 101 areas in the governorate of Idlib, and 61 areas in the southern and western countryside of Aleppo, according to the Syrian Observatory.
The last military campaign killed 166 people including 55 children, according to the Response Coordination Group in Syria, while the Syrian Civil Defense groups documented 208 victims including 60 children, during the same period.
The number of displaced people from the governorates of Aleppo and Idlib since mid-January 2020 reached 520 thousand civilians, bringing the total number since the beginning of December 2019 to 950 thousand displaced people, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Our Ma’arat
29/12/2019
Note
Throughout the month of December 2019, nearly 300 thousand people fled their houses in Idlib's southern countryside towards the north, after renewed offensives on their regions. Reports showed that Ma'arat al-Nu'man and its countryside have become nearly deserted, while thousands fled from Saraqib and its eastern countryside in case clashes spread out to their areas. Most displaced people moved to camps in the north east of the governorate, according to a report issued by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, on 2 January 2020.
It is worth mentioning that the number of displaced people during the same period, had reached nearly 51,259 families, or 283,452 people from Idlib's southern countryside, according to a statement by Humanitarian Response Syria, issued on 31 December 2019.

Journalism Is Not A Crime
19/11/2019
Note
On Friday 15 November 2019, Palestinian photographer Muath Amarneh was shot in the eye by Israeli soldiers while covering clashes in the town of Surif, north of Hebron. The Popular Resistance Committees in Surif had called for Friday prayers on confiscated lands west of the town, after the occupation authorities placed a fence around it to prevent citizens from entering or passing through.
It is worth mentioning that an escalation in the seizure of Palestinian lands had begun as Tel Aviv's government continues its policy of expanding the confiscation of lands owned by Palestinian citizens as well as public lands belonging to the treasury of the State of Palestine, and building more housing units in settlements in the West Bank, according to Jafra News and other news outlets.
Campaigns were launched online and on the ground by Palestinian and Arab activists and journalists campaign in solidarity with the Palestinian photographer Muath Amarneh after receiving confirmations of the complete loss of his left eye.

Al-Sarout, The Martyr
9/06/2019
Note
Abdul Baset Mamduh al-Sarout (1992-2019) was a goal-keeper in al-Karama Club, in Homs, and in the Syrian national football youth team.
He joined the revolution since its beginning and was known for the songs he sung during Homs' daily and nightly demonstrations alongside Fadwa Suleiman. His songs became known all over Syrian and his voice became a symbol of anger, protests and sit-ins inside and outside of Syria.
As the revolution entered the armament phase, al-Sarout established the "Bayyada Martyrs Batallion" and he fought against regime forces in Homs. In 2014, he left Homs under an evacuation agreement with the regime, after a horrendous siege was imposed on the opposition's factions in the old city of Homs, which lasted two years.
According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, al-Sarout lost his father and four of his brothers during the bombing and the battles in the city of Homs.
After he left the city, he was appointed as field leader in al-Azza Army, positioned in the Syrian north. There, he participated in several battles, the last of which was in Hama's northern countryside during the military escalation that was launched by the regime and its ally Russia since the end of April 2019.
On Saturday 8 June 2019, Abdul Baset was martyred as he succumbed to wounds he had sustained during these final battles, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, other opposing factions, and several local and international news outlets.
