Shireen Abu Akleh
12/05/2022
According To Source
#JournalismIsNotACrime
Note
Shireen Abu Akleh was a Palestinian journalist and reporter for several television channels, the most important of which is Al-Jazeera. During a quarter of a century, Akleh covered, with rare courage, the most important events in Palestine, such as the Intifada in 2000, the Israeli invasion of Jenin and Tulkarm in 2002, and the Israeli raids and military operations on the Gaza strip.
She was also the first Arab journalist to be allowed into Ashkelon prison in 2005.
On 11 May 11 2022, the Palestinian Ministry of Health announced that Shireen had passed away in Ibn Sina Specialized Hospital in Jenin, after being shot in the head by Israeli occupation forces, while covering the Israeli army's invasion of Jenin Camp, in the occupied West Bank.
Angry crowds gathered in the vicinity of Abu Akleh's house after her assassination. Occupation forces then stormed the house, dispersed the crowds around it, and demanded the removal of a Palestinian flag hanging on one of the walls.
Several countries condemned the killing of Abu Akleh, as did many Palestinian, Arab and international organizations. Most Arab media outlets, as well as their followers and fellow journalists reported the news of her martyrdom and considered her assassination while wearing a press jacket and helmet "an attempt to silence the voice of truth."
Abu Akleh was also mourned by her Arab audience who recalled the strength of her voice and her confidence when she used to say, "From Palestine, this is Shireen Abu Akleh, Al-Jazeera."
Three funeral processions took place for Shireen Abu Akleh; one in Jenin on the day she was killed, one in Ramallah with an official funeral organized by the Palestinian Authority, and one on 12 May 2022, with a mass funeral procession starting from the French Hospital in occupied Jerusalem and destined to reach Abu Akleh's final resting place. During the funeral, occupation forces stormed the hospital building and its courtyard, and assaulted the crowds and the coffin bearers, by pushing and beating them and throwing incendiary bombs, causing many injuries among the mourners, according to BBC, CNN, Al-Jazeera, the United Nations website, Le Monde, L'Orient le-Jour, France 24, AFP, Euronews, Arab 48, Al-Quds Al-Arabi, The New Arab, Al-Modon, and Enab Baladi.
It is worth noting that Birzeit University, in Ramallah, launched a scholarship and an award for media excellence in the name of the martyr, while the Jordan Media Institute announced an annual scholarship for a master's degree in media and journalism in honor of the late journalist. In addition, the American University of Beirut announced the Shireen Abu Akleh Memorial Scholarship for a master's degree in media studies, which would be granted to Palestinian women.
She was also the first Arab journalist to be allowed into Ashkelon prison in 2005.

Tadamon Neighborhood Massacre
29/04/2022
Note
Activists on social media and Twitter shared the hashtag #TadamonMassacre, after the publication of an investigation titled "Tadamon offerings" on the website of Al-Jumhuriya, and a video report on the investigation, published by the British newspaper The Guardian, on 27 April 27 2022. A leaked video that was widely spread, showed two members of Al-Mintaqa (district) Branch of the Syrian Military Intelligence Service, known as Branch 227, executing civilians, including women and children, throwing them in a big pit and then burning them, in the neighborhood of Tadamon, south of the capital, Damascus.
The date of this mass massacre, during which 41 civilians were killed according to the investigation, dates back to 16 April 2013. It was discovered by a new recruit in one of the security militias affiliated with the Assad regime, as he was browsing the contents of a computer and found horrific videos.
It is worth noting that this massacre is not the only one that has been uncovered. The investigation confirmed that Al-Mintaqa Branch, Branch 227, killed more than 280 civilians in the same way; they were taken to an isolated neighborhood in Damascus and were executed one by one in mass graves that had been prepared in advance. According the investigation published in Arabic on Al-Jumhuriya, the Guardian's report, The Levant, Syrian Press Center, BBC, The New Arab, Al-Quds Al-Arabi, Al-Arab, Arabi 21, Noon Post, Euronews, and Enab Baladi.

Note
In the early morning hours of 24 February 2022, Russian forces launched a military operation on Ukraine, against the backdrop of Ukraine's intention to join NATO and the severe tensions that had been rising for several years. After strong explosions hit a number of Ukrainian cities, Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, declared a state of emergency in the country and personally participated in the battle to defend his country.
On 25 February 2022, the UN Security Council held an emergency session but failed to adopt a draft resolution to stop the Russian aggression against Ukraine due to the Russian veto. States of the European Union, along with the United States and several other countries, hastened to impose major and severe economic sanctions against Russia, and declared a unified position rejecting the aggression and providing financial, logistic and military support to Ukraine and the Ukrainian people, according to CNN, Reuters, BBC, and Al-Quds Al-Arabi, Enab Baladi, The New Arab and AFP.

Restorative Justice
27/12/2021
According To Source
Pedersen, we can reach a solution if we move step by step. Al-Assad and whoever is with him should be held accountable for their crimes and the detainees should be released. The criminal is not equal to the victims.
Note
On 16 December 2021, UN Special Envoy to Syria, Geir Pedersen, used the term "restorative justice, or reparative justice" in his briefing to the Security Council, instead of "transitional justice", saying that this was one of the demands of the civil society delegation in the Constitutional Committee. Despite the issuance of a statement by the civil society delegation issued, in which they deny using this term and Pedersen admitting that there was a translation error, the latter refused to retract or amend the term in the United Nations documents.
Following these statements, Syrian activists launched a campaign under the hashtag #AccountabilityNotReconciliation. A group of civil society organizations and several media outlets also issued a statement denouncing Pedersen's speech, stressing the need to hold al-Assad accountable and bring justice to the victims, according to Pedersen's statement, Enab Baladi, Syria TV, STEP News Agency, and the Free Syrian Lawyers Association.

Note
Abdul Baset Mamduh al-Sarout (1992-2019) was a goal-keeper in al-Karama Club, in Homs, and in the Syrian national football youth team.
He joined the revolution since its beginning and was known for the songs he sung during Homs' daily and nightly demonstrations alongside Fadwa Suleiman. His songs became known all over Syrian and his voice became a symbol of anger, protests and sit-ins inside and outside of Syria.
As the revolution entered the armament phase, al-Sarout established the "Bayyada Martyrs Batallion" and he fought against regime forces in Homs. In 2014, he left Homs under an evacuation agreement with the regime, after a horrendous siege was imposed on the opposition's factions in the old city of Homs, which lasted two years.
According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, al-Sarout lost his father and four of his brothers during the bombing and the battles in the city of Homs.
After he left the city, he was appointed as field leader in al-Azza Army, positioned in the Syrian north. There, he participated in several battles, the last of which was in Hama's northern countryside during the military escalation that was launched by the regime and its ally Russia since the end of April 2019.
On Saturday 8 June 2019, Abdul Baset was martyred as he succumbed to wounds he had sustained during these final battles, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, other opposing factions, and several local and international news outlets.

On the evening of Thursday 29 May 2021, the the Speaker of the People's Council of Syria, Hammouda Sabbagh, announced that Bashar al-Assad had won 95.1% of the votes in the presidential elections, which were conducted by the regime in government-controlled areas, under the supervision of Iran and Iraq, and in a number of its embassies abroad. This is the second presidential election in Syria since the beginning of the war in 2011, according to which al-Assad will rule the country for a fourth term of seven years.
And while al-Assad was congratulated by his allies, the Council of the European Union announced, on 29 May 2021, the extension of the sanctions imposed by the European Union on the al-Assad's regime for an additional year, that is, until June 1st, 2022. The Council stressed in its statement that the Syrian regime is still practicing "continued repression of the civilian population in the country", according to the BBC, DW Arabic and CNN.
On the day after the announcement of his victory, Bashar al-Assad delivered a speech that the state media and media outlets close to the regime described as a "victory speech", which al-Assad not only described his opponents as traitors, but rather used terms that insult all Syrians who opposed him, describing them as "bulls", according to RT and Enab Baladi.
The results of the elections and al-Assad’s speech sparked anger on social media as opponents criticized the electoral process and the absence of any international monitoring. Twitter users published statistics, pictures, and videos showing the size of human loss, the numbers of detainees, and the extent of the destruction that ravaged in the country during the past ten years.

Do you remember why you started, and how?
Remember me and know that you will reach me the day you get to know me
I am the revolution, my spirit is eternal and will forever reside in your chests

No Return With Assad
11/11/2020
Note
On 11 November 2020, the International Conference on the Return of Syrian Refugees was launched in Damascus, with the participation of Russia and countries supporting the Syrian regime, while the United Nations attended as an observer. European Union countries boycotted the conference, considering that the cessation of conflict in a number of regions does not mean that Syria is now ready for the return of refugees, as it lacks proper infrastructure and services and in light of the flagrant human rights violations committed in the country. Many humanitarian and human rights organizations, along with a group of political organizations, also announced that they will boycott the conference. In the countrysides of Idlib and Aleppo, 41 civil and revolutionary groups released a boycott statement, in which they declared that Russia is still attempting to resurrect al-Assad's regime and give it false legitimacy. Activists outside of Syria launched a social media campaign under the hashtag #no_return_with_assad, stressing that the existence of al-Assad and his regime is the real obstacle to the return of displaced persons and refugees, according to Reuters, Middle East Monitor, DW Arabic, RT Arabic, al-Modon, the Syrian Press Center.

From Idlib to the United States, no to racism.
"I can't breathe!"
Those were the last words said by George Floyd, an unarmed African-American man who suffocated to death after a Minneapolis police officer kneeled on his neck while pinning him down.

Note
Hundreds of thousands of Americans took to the streets as protests broke out in several cities in the United States, accompanied by violence and clashes between protesters and police officers. A wave of anger ignited the protests after a video shared on social media showed the death of an African-American man named George Floyd who was crying out "I can't breathe", as a police officer kneeled on his neck and back as he pinned him to the ground, ignoring the calls of people asking him to stop, according the BBC and Euronews.
